Mexican Legend - Cleric Bridge.

Around 1649 this true story happened with the passage of time has become a haunting legend. The place where these writings echos took place in the ancient chronicles was very simple and typical of the region located in the area of the current tlatelolco Mexico Valley buildings; just across the small stream called Texontlali to reach the present district of La Lagunilla, a better built houses, one of which belonged to a religion known as Don Juan de Nava, who officiated in the church of Santa Catarina were. This priest had a beautiful niece in her care, which was at that age when you dream about a husband named Margarita Jauregui.

The third character is a provisional bishop of Yucatan and viceroy of New Spain, Portuguese gentleman highly respected but very bad character called Don Duarte de Zarraza.
Because illustrious family of Don Duarte and Dona Margarita Zarraza Jáuregui, attended the same viceregal party, and came the day when they met at one of those parties.

Knowing such a beautiful lady and start Love was all one for the Portuguese enamoradizo, which investigated and went to the house of the priest placed across the bridge of the aforementioned ditch. Your compliments, frequent presence, your gifts and cards soon inflamed burning chest Margarita Jauregui was at the very point of age for casorio, he soon agreed to amorous requirements Portuguese.

But Don Fray Juan de Nava also investigated many things Don Duarte de Zarraza and knew well back in his homeland having left many debts, also left two women with their offspring, here in the capital of New Spain wearing a dissipation and quiet and who lived in the house and was exhibited gaya with barraganas descocadas [concubines]. He also had several mistresses found in parts of the city and walked in affairs with ten bridesmaids.

For all these reasons, the priest Juan de Nava strictly forbade his niece to accept the love of Portuguese stubborn, but neither Don or Dona Margarita Duarte heeded warnings clergyman and continued their affair behind the ensotanado uncle.

Twice the priest Juan de Nava spoke with the call Duarte Zarraza already violent tone forbidding him to come over just to your home or to bridge the ditch Texontlali, but in reply received a blasphemy, mockery and arrogance on the part of the Portugal.

And both priest opposed those loves and rebuked many times and Zarraza niece, decided to remove this environmental cleric, because, he said, no one could oppose their wishes.

Following to the letter and stale chronic diluted, we know that the Portuguese decided to kill the evil cleric precisely on April 3 of that year, 1649 and the effect went to tell Margarita Jauregui, who as his uncle-guardian does not would let them marry, should flee to marry in Puebla de los Angeles. The woman agreed to continue the gallant circumventing the will of the priest.

The appointed day was talking through the window of the house around the late afternoon, when Duarte de Zarraza saw what the priest approaching the bridge over the ditch Texontlali without saying anything to Margarita, he left the balcony and raced to the bridge.

No one knows what they said rather discussed cleric and Portuguese, but suddenly, Duarte Zarraza took out a dagger appeared in whose pommel engraved shield his Portuguese home and drove a furious blow to the skull to cure.

The priest fell mortally wounded and Portuguese dragged a few steps and threw it into the muddy waters of the canal over the railing of the bridge.

As would many opposition cleric known to his affair with his niece Margarita Duarte Zarraza decided to hide first and then flee to Veracruz, where he remained about a year.

After that time, the Portuguese returned to the capital of New Spain and decided to go see Margarita Jauregui, asking him to run away with him, and he was dead his uncle the priest.

He waited for the night and headed north towards by the side of Tlatelolco ... came to the bridge of the canal, but could not pass it, in fact he never got to cross vivo. The next day early morning walkers discovered dead, his face horribly disfigured by a grimace of terror, as terror suffered discoverers as Don Duarte de Zarraza lay strangled by a horrible skeleton covered by a tattered robe, stained silt, mud stinking water. The fleshless hands of him dead, which was identified in the act cleric Juan de Nava, were attached to the neck of Zarraza while shining the first rays of the morning sun, the blade of a knife that was cleaving its mondo skull and shield appeared knob whose house Zarraza.

No doubt, the cleric had left his swampy tomb where he remained all the time that the Portuguese was absent and return to the city emerged with a vengeance.

So say the chronicles, told this legend years later and so, the bridge and the street nameless that formed in time, was known for many years as the "Clergy Bridge Street", known today by 7th and 8th of Allende by PART Carrizo old alley.
